Civil unrest in Hyderabad

I’m not too familiar with Indian politics but I have tried to follow what is going on in Hyderabad right now. In a quick summary, Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh but several political groups (headed by the political party TRS) want a separation of the state. They propose the creation of the state Telangana which is currently a region in Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad is located within Telangana. The ones who are for the creation are angry because the central government changed it’s stance on the creation of the state.

Student protest in favor of the creation of Telangana

There have been protests and destruction of property.

I received an e-mail a few days ago from the University of Hyderabad which basically said the situation isn’t bad, most of the protests are 20 miles away so the university has not been affected, and that the program is still on. The exchange students were told that the university will be peaceful, but travel will be restricted which is disappointing because I was looking forward to traveling around the city. I have also talked to people in Hyderabad and they assured me the situation is under control. However, I’m not sure if the police have kept control in a peaceful way. I guess I will have to wait and see what the situation is like once I get there.
